The wedding is one day. The marriage is every day after that.
I've sat with enough couples across Minnesota to know how easy it is to lose sight of that. Couples will spend countless hours choosing the perfect venue, tasting cakes, selecting flowers, building seating charts, and finding just the right photographer. Those details matter, and I'd never wave them off; they help create a memorable celebration of what God has brought together. But here's the truth I try to share with every couple who sits across from me: the quality of your marriage will never be determined by the quality of your wedding.
Years from now, no one will remember the color of the napkins or whether the DJ played exactly the right song. What will matter is whether you built a relationship that kept growing through life's celebrations and disappointments, its successes and its hardships, and whether you kept God at the center of all of it. At The Stronger Life, we believe the goal isn't simply to help couples get married. It's to help them build a stronger life together, one that's still standing, and still joyful, decades later.
Before Marriage: Build a Foundation, Not Just a Celebration
A strong marriage doesn't happen by accident. It's built on purpose, one intentional choice at a time. Before saying "I do," every couple should invest in conversations that reach far beyond wedding planning. In my premarital counseling work, I walk couples through the areas that actually predict whether a marriage will thrive, and most of them have nothing to do with the wedding day.
These are the questions worth sitting with honestly:
- How do we handle conflict in a way that honors God and each other?
- What does healthy, honest communication look like for us?
- How will we manage money as stewards of what God has entrusted to us?
- What expectations do we have about intimacy, and how will we guard it?
- How will we prioritize our relationship after children arrive?
- How will we navigate relationships with our families and set healthy boundaries?
- What values and faith rhythms will guide our home?
- How will we support one another through seasons of stress, loss, or transition?
Love may be what brings two people together, but love alone isn't what keeps them there. Shared commitment, trust, faith, and a willingness to keep growing are what carry a marriage through the years.
Marriage Is More Than Compatibility
Many couples come in asking the same question: are we compatible? It's a fair thing to wonder, and compatibility genuinely helps. But where compatibility is helpful, character is essential. The healthiest marriages I've seen aren't built because two people think alike. They're built because two people choose to love well even when they don't see eye to eye, and they draw on something bigger than themselves to do it.
Real love shows up as patience, humility, forgiveness, kindness, honesty, sacrifice, and grace, the very qualities Scripture points to again and again. And none of them magically appear on the wedding day. They're developed over a lifetime, with God's help, as two people commit to becoming more like Christ, both as individuals and as a couple.
Communication Is the Lifeline
Nearly every struggling relationship I encounter shares one common thread: somewhere along the way, communication broke down. Healthy couples aren't the ones who avoid difficult conversations. They're the ones who have learned to have them well, with gentleness, honesty, and respect.
In practice, that looks like listening before defending, seeking to understand before being understood, and speaking honestly without attacking. It means addressing issues early, before resentment has room to grow, and assuming the best of each other instead of the worst. The strongest marriages aren't conflict-free; they're repair-rich. They know how to come back together, ask forgiveness, and move forward as a team.
Protect Your Friendship
Long before you became husband and wife, you became friends. Don't lose that. Laugh together, go on dates, take walks, dream out loud, celebrate each other's victories, and keep learning who the other person is becoming.
Friendship isn't something that only happens at the beginning of a marriage. It's something you protect intentionally all the way through. Some of the most grounded couples I know are the ones who simply never stopped enjoying each other's company, even after decades together.
Choose Your Marriage Every Day
Wedding vows aren't sustained by emotions. They're sustained by daily decisions, and by the grace of God that carries you when your own strength runs out. Every day, in ways large and small, you get to choose:
- To be patient.
- To forgive.
- To encourage.
- To serve.
- To communicate.
- To pursue one another.
- To remain faithful in both action and attitude.
Healthy marriages are rarely built through grand romantic gestures. They're built through thousands of ordinary moments filled with intentional love, the kind of love that reflects the faithfulness of the One who first loved us.
Keep Growing Together
People change, and a marriage should grow right along with them. The healthiest couples never assume they've "arrived." They keep learning. They read books, attend marriage conferences, and seek counseling or coaching before problems ever become crises. They ask hard questions and celebrate the growth they see.
I often remind couples that investing in your marriage isn't a sign that something's wrong. It's a sign that you value what God has given you enough to keep stewarding it well. Strong marriages stay strong for one simple reason: the couples in them never stop investing.
Remember What Brought You Together
Life gets busy. Careers grow, children arrive, and schedules fill until there's barely room to breathe. Without intentionality, two spouses can slowly become roommates who share an address but little else.
So never stop pursuing one another. Never stop expressing gratitude, never stop saying "I love you," and never stop making your relationship a priority, or thanking God for bringing you together in the first place. The little things have a way of becoming the big things.
Grace Changes Everything
No marriage is perfect, because no two people are. You will disappoint one another. You will misunderstand each other. At times, you will simply fail one another. But healthy marriages aren't built on perfection; they're built on grace, the same grace God extends to each of us through Christ.
Grace allows forgiveness. Grace creates safety. Grace restores trust. And grace reminds us that love was never something to be earned through flawless performance. It's demonstrated through faithful commitment, through showing up again and again, even when it's hard.
The Legacy You're Building
Marriage isn't only about the two people standing at the altar. It's about the generations that follow. Children learn what love looks like by watching their parents. Grandchildren often remember how Grandma and Grandpa treated each other far more than anything they ever owned.
Friends notice healthy relationships. Communities are strengthened by strong families. And a Christ-centered marriage becomes a quiet, powerful witness to the world of what God's love looks like in real life. In the end, a healthy marriage is one of the greatest gifts you can ever leave behind.
What Matters Most
At the end of your life, you won't wish you'd spent more time choosing centerpieces. You'll be grateful for the conversations that deepened your friendship, the forgiveness that restored your relationship, and the laughter shared around the dinner table. You'll treasure the hands held during difficult seasons, the prayers whispered together, and the ordinary days that quietly added up to an extraordinary life.
The wedding begins a marriage. Intentional love, grounded in faith and sustained by grace, is what keeps it strong. At The Stronger Life, we believe the goal isn't simply to help couples have an unforgettable wedding day. It's to help them build a marriage that still feels like the best decision they ever made 10, 20, even 50 years later. Because the goal was never just to get married. It's to stay married, and to genuinely enjoy the journey together, with Christ at the center every step of the way.
