The wedding lasts a few hours. The marriage is meant to last a lifetime. That gap is the reason premarital counseling matters.
At The Stronger Life, I believe preparing for marriage means more than booking the right venue, finalizing the guest list, and making sure everything is ready for the big day. It means preparing two people for the life they are about to build together. For couples who share a Christian faith, that preparation can go further still, because marriage is not only a relationship. It is a covenant.
Love Is the Beginning, Not the Whole Plan
Every marriage starts with two people who arrive exactly as they are: different personalities, backgrounds, habits, families, and often very different pictures of what marriage is supposed to look like.
Love matters. It is the reason you are standing there at all. But love by itself does not teach you how to talk to each other when you are frustrated, and it does not tell you what to do when a disagreement turns into an argument neither of you knows how to end. Love does not hand you a plan for money, intimacy, family boundaries, faith, parenting, or the changes that arrive with each new season of life.
The encouraging part is that these are skills, and skills can be learned. Better still, they can be learned early, while the stakes are low and you are still on the same side of the table. That is what intentional premarital counseling is for.
My approach begins with a simple conviction. Marriage is not two people trying to make each other happy. It is two people learning to build something strong and healthy with God at the center.
Christian Premarital Counseling Without the Clichés
Being Christian does not mean pretending marriage will always be easy, and it does not mean avoiding hard conversations. It certainly does not mean telling a couple to “pray about it” when a real issue needs attention. Faith should make us more willing to be honest with each other, not less.
So the work we do together is faith-filled, practical, and honest. We talk about what you will actually meet once the reception is over:
- Communication
- Conflict
- Expectations
- Finances
- Intimacy
- Family relationships
- Forgiveness
- Roles and responsibilities
- Emotional connection
- Spiritual life
- Decision-making
We also talk about the expectations each of you carries in quietly, the ones that stay unspoken until the day they are broken. My goal is simple: that you walk into marriage with your eyes open, your heart prepared, and a clearer understanding of the person you have chosen to spend your life with.
You Do Not Have to Be Struggling to Benefit
If that sounds like something reserved for couples in trouble, it is not. One of the most common misconceptions about counseling is that something has to be wrong before it is worth your time. Some of the best work a couple will ever do happens before there is a problem to solve.
You service the car before the engine fails. You see a doctor before a symptom becomes a diagnosis. You train for a career before your first day on the job. One of the largest commitments of your life deserves at least that much intention.
Premarital counseling is not repair work. It is strengthening a relationship before the pressures of marriage find the weak places you did not know were there.
What the Process Looks Like
Every couple is different, so the conversations are shaped around you, but the path itself is straightforward. We begin with a free 30-minute consultation, in person or over Google Meet, with no pressure and no obligation. If it feels like a good fit, each of you completes the Prepare/Enrich relationship assessment, which gives us an honest map of your strengths and the areas worth your attention. From there we meet for five or six personalized sessions, and you leave each one with something you can use that week.
💡 Tip
One practical note for Minnesota couples: completing the program also satisfies the state’s premarital education requirement, which lowers your marriage license fee from $125 to $50.
What Makes The Stronger Life Different
I bring years of work with couples and families, along with a Christian perspective on marriage and one stubborn goal. It has never been simply to help you get married. The goal isn’t just to get married. It’s to stay married and like each other.
That means preparing you for everything that comes after the wedding:
- The first argument
- The first major financial decision
- The first disagreement about family
- The first difficult season
- The first time one of you feels disconnected
- The first big change in career, health, parenting, or priorities
Marriages are built in those moments, and strong ones are rarely an accident. They are built on purpose, one conversation, one decision, and one season at a time.
A Christian Foundation for a Lifelong Marriage
For couples who want faith at the center of their marriage, the foundation matters far more than the ceremony. A Christian marriage is not the same thing as a Christian wedding. It is letting your faith shape how you love, communicate, forgive, serve, decide, handle conflict, and walk through the seasons that test you.
That is why this work looks well past the aisle. The question worth asking is not only what kind of wedding you want. It is what kind of marriage you want to build.
Your Marriage Deserves Preparation
If you are engaged, newly engaged, or seriously thinking about marriage, do not wait for a problem before you start working on your relationship. Start now. Have the conversations, ask the hard questions, name your expectations, practice the way you listen to each other, and talk honestly about what your faith will look like once you share a home and a calendar.
Because making it to the altar was never the goal. The goal is a marriage strong enough for the decades that follow it.
That is what The Stronger Life is about: helping couples grow stronger together, personally and relationally.
